With over 1 billion users now on Instagram, it's important to take steps to be seen! One of the easiest things you can do to stand out on Instagram is to optimize your bio. Your Instagram bio is front row, center for profile visitors. It's your chance to capture the attention of users who are unfamiliar with your nonprofit, highlight news and events, and drive traffic to your website. Here's how:
CHOOSE A PROFILE PICTURE:
Choose a profile picture that identifies your nonprofit, like a business logo. If your logo has a tagline or tons of wording, opt to showcase an edited version of your logo to just include the icon graphic rather than the logo-type.
INCLUDE YOUR FOCUS:
For nonprofits, your bio should serve as your mission statement. Tell your followers and potential followers who you are and what you do. Be sure to express your brand’s voice and personality. Choose your words carefully–you only get 150 characters. (Emojis go a long way in Instagram bios for this reason.)
INCLUDE A CALL-TO-ACTION:
A good rule of thumb is to encourage your followers to visit your website. Using a call-to-action encourages people to move off Instagram and complete a desired task. Use words like “click here to visit our website”, “contact us here to learn more" or "donate now".
ADD A LINK:
The only place where you can put a clickable link on Instagram is in your profile below your bio description. If you’re going to see any success with Instagram, it’s important to use this link effectively. The good news is that you can change this URL as often as you like. A good option is to use a link service like Linktree, where they offer you the ability to add multiple links to your profile. There's a free version for those on a budget or you can upgrade to remove Linktree branding and jazz-up your profile.
SET UP YOUR HIGHLIGHTS:
Many nonprofits skip this step but personally I think it's one of the most important items that help drive engagement. Use your highlights to help showcase your products and services, your clientele, even your recommendations or reviews from customers. Make sure your highlight covers stay on brand and offer a clear message on what each highlight includes.
Here are a couple great examples to get you started.
